South Carolina Board of Long Term Health Care

Preceptor Letter

Board of Long Term Health Care Administrators

P. O. Box 11329

Columbia, S.C. 29211-1329

Telephone (803) 896-4544 Fax (803) 896-4555

This letter is an introduction to the South Carolina Board of Long Term Health Care Administrators (LTHCA) Administrator-In-Training (AIT) program. This program is an attempt to help satisfy the growing demand for qualified nursing home administrators through the provision of a standardized, work-based training program.

During the program, qualified AIT candidates work under the direct supervision of an approved preceptor such as yourself, to develop specific professional competencies while obtaining invaluable experience in an approved long term care facility. Successful completion of the program enables the AIT to apply for licensure as a nursing home administrator, foregoing the qualifying work experience required by the South Carolina Code of Regulations, Chapter 93.

The South Carolina Board of LTHCA has established provisions for admission to the AIT program as a preceptor. The requirements are as follows:

  1. Currently licensed in South Carolina.

  2. Licensed for the previous three years.

  3. Have no disciplinary sanctions against the license.

  4. Be employed as administrator of record in a facility licensed under DHEC regulations.

  5. Employed in a facility that accepts Medicare and Medicaid for two years of the previous five.

Qualified Nursing Home Administrators who are interested in becoming a preceptor should complete the enclosed Administrator-In-Training Preceptor Application and submit the completed application to:

Scdllr, Board of LTHCA

P. O. Box 11329

Columbia, S.C. 29211-1329

ATTENTION: Board Administrator

Following review of the application by the S.C. Board of LTHCA, the preceptor will be notified by mail of the Board's decision. When approved, the preceptor will be advised of the details regarding preceptor training. There will be a fee of $50.00 for the AIT Program Guidelines and an additional charge for the training. Continuing education credit will be granted for completion of preceptor training; the specifics and applicable fees will be provided along with the approval letter.

Successful completion of preceptor training results in the preceptor's name, facility name, and business telephone number being added to a list of approved preceptors. This list is provided to AIT candidates for selection of a preceptor. It is the responsibility of the AIT to contact a preceptor to determine if the preceptor will accept the AIT. Once the preceptor accepts an AIT, an AIT Contract must be completed and submitted for Board approval.

Enclosed is an Administrator-In-Training Preceptor Application as well as a brief list of general preceptor responsibilities. Should you have further questions, please call the Board of Long Term Health Care Administrators at (803) 896-4544.
